Introduction:
Do Nascar fans even really know what they want from their sport?

I am a huge Nascar fan that quite simply loves racing.Yes I have a driver and team I root for but above all else I love racing.

Every year at the end of the season the ridiculous cries from Nascar fans begin. It is a constant barrage of what the "fans" feel needs to be changed."The Chase needs to be changed,The cars need to be changed." All the fans seem to do is cry anymore about the sport.

The most common thing heard amongst the crying is the "I wish they would go back to when racing was good" nonsense.Let's really look back at the "good ole days." It was not uncommon at all for the second place car to be 5 or more laps down.It was possible to go into the pits change a motor and still have a top ten finish. How great could these races really have been?I mean the last time I watched a race most cars were still on the lead lap and at least had a slim chance of winning the race.Even the premiere race in all of Nascar the Daytona 500 has been won by multiple laps ahead, but in the current climate of Nascar winning a race by lapping the field is not only uncommon but unheard of.Could you imagine the tv ratings for a race where second place finishes 5-10 laps down? The tv contract wouldn't last very long at all.

Also in todays Nascar most of the teams competing have multi million dollar sponsorships. This hasn't always been true.During much of Petty Enterprises domination of Nascar they were the only team with "big time" sponsorship. How great could it have really been when only a few teams had the money to use technology to help their team?Yes the days of the "small" teams have gone by but in a sport where money and sponsorship are keys to being competitive, how competitive could a team sponsored by the local garage be?

The current racing in the Cup series is some the greatest there has ever been yet the cries remain.Jimmie Johnson just finished winning his third straight Championship and now the cries are getting louder to change the Chase and points system.Never mind the fact that Jimmie would have won the last 3 Championships under the old system as well.We want a sport that gets respect yet many of the so called fans do nothing but belittle the sport and call for change every time something doesn't go their driver's way.

I can understand Nascar wanting to make the run for the Championship more exciting but constantly making changes, especially due to fans who haven't got a clue, will not bring the excitement about.Everyone likes to make comparisons to the Championships of other major sports but neglects to look at the fact that the other major sports have had the way there Championship is decided in place for many years and have only made very minor changes and "tweaks" to how teams make it into the playoff system.Yes we can all wish for the Championship to be as exciting as a Super Bowl or a 7th game of the World Series but that's not going to happen because this is Nascar not the NFL or MLB.

We as Nascar fans should be happy that in our sport every race counts towards winning a Championship.People will say oh it's just about points racing until you get to the Chase but every race leading up to the Chase carries the same point value and same degree of importance every week. It's like having the playoffs all season long. And whether we choose to believe it or not every team that starts the race has a chance to win the race.

The "good ole days" of racing are actually the ones we're watching right now.The competition level has never been higher than it currently is.So quit whining and realize how great this sport is right now.No we don't have the "characters" we once had but we damn sure have better racing and isn't that what this sport is all about ,The Racing?
